The Tribal District Court is a general jurisdiction Court of record that hears all matters within the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation's jurisdiction. The Potawatomi Tribal District Court was created through the Potawatomi Law and Order Codes, which created a trial level district court and an appeals court. The procedure and regulations that the Courts follow are codified, that is, the rules are written down. While much of the procedure resembles that used by state and federal courts, the code also recognizes Tribal custom and tradition as an important part of its source of law, just as state and federal courts rely upon the Anglo-American common law. The Clerk of Court's office has a copy of the Tribal Law and Order Codes for review by any party that has questions as to the Tribal law.
Tribal Court office hours are from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm Monday thru Friday.
The Court of Appeals is the Court of last resort to which appeals may be taken from the District Court. The judicial decisions of the Court of Appeals are final and are not subject to further appeal. The Court of Appeals has three attorney judges, who jointly hear any appeal from the decisions of the trial court.
