Animal Control

Home

The Animal Control Unit began service in March 2000, with the hiring of Rick Burns.  Rick is responsible for enforcing Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation Law & Order Code Title 20.

Rick patrols the cluster sites, government building areas and other areas as requested by reservation residents.  Rick takes calls from residents regarding nuisance animals, animal bites, loose livestock, and has even taken a skunk and a few snakes out of area resident’s homes.  Rick maintains the animal pound.  Owners of impounded animals are required to remit fines and boarding costs before the animal will be released.

DOG LICENSING
Dog tags are required for canines living in the cluster sites.  To obtain or renew tags for your animal, contact Rick at the Tribal Police Department – (785) 966-3024 or toll free at (877) 727-6743.  Be prepared to provide proof of rabies vaccination.  Dog tags are $12/year.  Animals that have been neutered or spayed receive a $6 discount.

RABIES CLINIC
Each spring we sponsor a Rabies Clinic where reservation residents may bring their animal for free rabies vaccination and flea & tick dip.  Dr. Tim Parks of Heartland Veterinary Clinic performs the vaccination and always has a supply of other standard vaccinations available for purchase.  Watch the PBP News, the PBPNation website and community bulletin boards for dates and times.

ADOPTION
Rick often gets good animals at the pound the owner just couldn’t keep any longer.  If you are interested in adopting one of these fine animals, please contact Rick at the Police Department.
